Santa María Goretti
Mensaje Semanal del 6 de Julio:
La Iglesia conmemora a Santa María Goretti, en el aniversario de su martirio. Nació en Corinaldo, Italia, en 1890, de una familia humilde. Su niñez, bastante dura, transcurrió en Nettuno (cerca de Roma) y durante ese tiempo se ocupó en ayudar a su madre en las tareas domésticas. Era piadosa y constante en la oración. El 6 de Julio de 1902, cuando ella contaba con once años de edad, fue amenazada con un punzón por Alessandro Serenelli, quien trató de abusar sexualmente de ella. Ella prefirió morir antes que pecar. Durante su agonía perdonó a su agresor quien, tras años de cárcel, se convirtió. El Papa Pío XII la canonizó el 24 de junio de 1950, en la plaza de san Pedro en Roma y con la asistencia de su madre, su familia y su asesino, ya convertido; y la llamó “pequeña y dulce mártir de la pureza”. Juan Pablo II, el 6 de julio de 2003 dijo: “Marietta, como era llamada familiarmente, recuerda a la juventud del tercer milenio que la auténtica felicidad exige valentía y espíritu de sacrificio, rechazo de todo compromiso con el mal y disponibilidad para pagar con el propio sacrificio, incluso con la muerte, la fidelidad a Dios y a sus mandamientos”. Existe una película (“Cielo sulla palude” = Cielo sobre el pantano) dirigida por Augusto Genina, 1949; y un documental: “Fourteen Flowers of Pardon” Catorce Flores de Perdón”, elaborado por EWTN.

Her difficult childhood continued as she and her family had to move to Nettuno (near Rome) and during this time she helped her mother with domestic chores. She was pious and devoted to prayer. On july 6, 1902 when she was 11 years old a man by the name of Alessandro Serenelli threatened her with death if she did not do as he said. She did not submit and preferred to die than to commit a mortal sin. During her agony she forgave her aggressor who after being incarcerated experienced a conversion. Pope Pius XII canonized her on the 24th of June 1950 in St. Peter’s Square in Rome while her mother, family and repented and converted murder were present; he called her “little and sweet martyr of purity.” John Paul II on July 6, 2003 said: “Marietta, as she was familiarly known, reminds the youth of our modern society that authentic happiness requires courage and a spirit of sacrifice, remaining firm against the temptations of the world and willingness to pay with our own sacrifice including death, fidelity to God and His Commandments.” There’s a movie called “Cielo Sulla Palude or Heaven above the Swamp directed by Augusto Genina, 1949 a documentary and “Fourteen Flowers of Pardon”, produced by EWTN.

Estudio Bíblico
La Iglesia católica desea que todos sus miembros conozcan y aprecien la Palabra de Dios puesta por escrito: la Biblia. Para eso, es de suma importancia contar con una introducción mínima a la lectura e interpretación de la Biblia. En la parroquia de St. Mary's (2612 W. State St.) hay un grupo de estudio y reflexión sobre la Biblia, que se reúne todos los martes de 7:00 pm a 9:00 pm. Si gusta acompañarnos, usted será muy bien recibido/a. Dice San Jerónimo que la ignorancia de la Sagrada Escritura, es ignorancia de Cristo. Les esperamos.

Día del Padre
¡Feliz Día del Padre! ¡Cuántas cosas buenas hemos aprendido de nuestros padres! Ciertamente nos han enseñado cómo hacer las cosas, pero sobretodo como vivir la vida. Para quienes nacimos varones, la presencia de nuestro padre significó el modelo a seguir cada día. Sin darnos cuenta, empezamos a hacer las cosas que él hacía y la forma como las hacía; y hasta empezamos a imitar sus modos y movimientos. En pocas palabras, nuestro papá fue el primer héroe en nuestra vida. ¡Qué afortunados, qué bendecidos, somos quienes tuvimos un buen papá! Quiero rendir con mis palabras un homenaje a mi propio padre, Manuel Camacho, y a todos los papás de nuestra comunidad en este su día. Que Dios les premie todos lo sacrificios que han hecho por nosotros y los conserve sanos y alegres el resto de su vida. ¡Felicidades!

++++++Happy Father’s Day! How many good things have we learned from our fathers! Certainly they have taught us how to do things, but above all they have taught us how to live life. For those of us who were born male, the presence of our father signified the model to follow each day. Without notice, we began to do the things he did in the same manner he did them; and we even began to imitate his manners and movements. In so many works, our father was our first hero in our lives. How fortunate, how blessed, are those of us who had a good father! I want to pay homage with this message to my own father, Manuel Camacho and all the fathers of our community on this day. May God reward all of the sacrifices you have made for us and may you be healthy and happy the rest of your life. Congratulations!

"Love your Enemies" (Matthew 5,44)
Scripture: Matthew 5:43-48
Meditation: What makes Christians different from others and what makes Christianity distinct from any other religion? It is grace – treating others, not as they deserve, but as God wishes them to be treated – with loving-kindness and mercy. God is good to the unjust as well as the just. His love embraces saint and sinner alike. God seeks our highest good and teaches us to seek the greatest good of others, even those who hate and abuse us. Our love for others, even those who are ungrateful and selfish towards us, must be marked by the same kindness and mercy which God has shown to us. It is easier to show kindness and mercy when we can expect to benefit from doing so. How much harder when we can expect nothing in return. Our prayer for those who do us ill both breaks the power of revenge and releases the power of love to do good in the face of evil. How can we possibly love those who cause us harm or ill-will? With God all things are possible. He gives power and grace to those who believe and accept the gift of the Holy Spirit. His love conquers all, even our hurts, fears, prejudices and griefs. Only the cross of Jesus Christ can free us from the tyranny of malice, hatred, revenge, and resentment and gives us the courage to return evil with good. Such love and grace has power to heal and to save from destruction. Do you know the power of Christ’s redeeming love and mercy?

Primera Comunión/First Communion

Queridos/as niños/as y jóvenes que por primera vez van a comer el Cuerpo y a beber la Sangre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Hoy es uno de los días más importantes de su vida, porque es un encuentro con su Dios y Señor en el sacramento de la Eucaristía; y también porque van a participar por primera vez, con los demás miembros de la comunidad católica de Santa María, del Banquete de Vida Eterna que se ofrece cada domingo. Quiero felicitarlos sinceramente y pedirles que dejen que su corazón se llene de alegría y gratitud por el regalo divino que van a recibir. Al mismo tiempo quiero felicitar a sus papás, que los han acompañado durante su preparación y van a estar con ustedes, junto con sus padrinos y madrinas, en este día tan hermoso. En nombre de toda la parroquia quiero expresar también mi agradecimiento al equipo de catequistas que dieron su tiempo, energía, conocimientos y amor para preparar a estos niños/as y jóvenes. Que Dios les llene de su bendiciones. ¡Felicidades!

+++++++ Dear boys and girls and young people of our Spanish Speaking Sector, who for the first time will be eating the Body and drinking the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Today is one of the most important days of your life because it is an encounter with your God and Lord in the sacrament of the Eucharist; and also because you will be participating for the first time with the rest of the members of our Catholic Community of St. Mary’s at the Banquet of Eternal Life that is offered every Sunday. I want to sincerely congratulate you and ask you to allow your heart to be filled with joy and gratitude for the divine gift that you have received. At the same time I’d like to congratulate your parents who have accompanied you during your preparation and will be with you along with your godparents on this beautiful day. In the name of the whole parish I want to express too my appreciation to the catechist team who gave of their time, energy, knowledge and love to prepare these children and young people. May God fill you with blessings. Congratulations!
