On the sacredness of our body: a meditation on I Cor 6,13-14

"In whatever way the call to discipleship comes, Paul reminds us that we do not encounter the Holy as disembodied spirits. Rather, our bodies are sacred "temples of the Holy Spirit." That Jesus took on human flesh and that God raised him bodily underscore the importance of the body. A corporeal spirituality helps us counter any exploitation of the body: in the sex trade, or overexposure in the manner of dress, or the battering of bodies with abuse or torture, or the devaluing of aging bodies. It is through our bodies that we experience godliness, and it is in them that we glorify God." (Barbara E. Reid, "America," January 5-12, 2009).

Oración por la Unidad de los Cristianos

Semana de Oración por la Unidad de los Cristianos

Los cristianos de todo el mundo rezarán por la unidad en 2009 con el fín de que "estén todos unidos en tu mano" (Ver Ezequiel 37,17). En efecto, congregaciones y parroquias de todo el mundo toman parte en la Semana de Oración, que se celebra tradicionalmente del 18 al 25 de enero (en el hemisferio norte) y en torno a Pentecostés (en el hemisferio sur). El tema de este año es: "estarán unidos en tu mano" (Ez 37,17). Estas palabras proféticas de Ezequiel dirigidas al pueblo elegido son una alegoría de la unidad de la Iglesia, aunque el profeta las aplicó a la necesaria unidad de Israel rota tanto por los pecados de los dirigentes como del pueblo. Habla el profeta de dos leños a modo de trozos de una vara de mando rota, que el Señor le ordena al profeta unir en su propia mano como signo para la casa de Israel (Ez 37,15-28). Son aplicables a la Iglesia dividida porque, al igual que el pueblo de la Antigua Alianza, dividido en contiendas contrarias a la voluntad de Dios, también las divisiones de las iglesias cristianas son contrarias a la voluntad de Cristo, que quiso una sola y única Iglesia visible: "Como Tú, Padre, estás en Mí y Yo en Tí, que también ellos estén en nosotros. De este modo el mundo creerá que Tú me has enviado" (Juan 17,21).
Esta semana también celebraremos la Dedicación de nuestra nueva Iglesia parroquial. Damos gracias a Dios, porque con su gracia nos fue posible llevar a cabo esta tarea; y a todas las personas cuya contribución ayudó a la realización del proyecto. ¡Gracias!

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Christians from all over the world pray for unity in 2009 so “that they may become one in your hand” (Ezekiel 37:15-19, 22-24a). In effect, congregations and parishes of the world participate in the Week of Prayer that is traditionally from the 18th to the 25th of January (in the Northern Hemisphere) and in turn during Pentecost (in the Southern Hemisphere). This year’s theme is: “That they may become one in your hand.” (Ezekiel 37:17).

These prophetic words from Ezekiel, directed to the Chosen People, are an allegory of Church Unity; even though the prophet applied them to the necessary unity of Israel torn by the sins of both the leaders and the people. The prophet speaks of joining together two pieces of wood; symbolic of joining Israel. The Lord orders the prophet to unite two sticks with his very hands as a sign of unity in the Kingdom of Israel (Ez 37:15-28).

They are applicable to the divided Church because, just as the Old Covenant divided in the adverse struggles of the Will of God, the divisions of the Christian churches are contrary to the Will of Christ, who wanted only one, unified visible Church: “As you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they may also be in us. In this way, the world will believe that you have sent me.” (John 17, 21).

We also celebrate the Dedication of our new Parish Church. We give thanks to God, because with His grace, he made it possible for us to realize this work; and each person, whose contribution helped (aided) in the realization of the project. Thanks!
