Friendship: Friends of God
There are many beautiful things we could say relating to friendship. But it is most important to feel it and live it rather than to define it. Friendship is a human necessity. We all need someone whom we can confide in and share important moments with about matters of our daily life. Friendship is a vital necessity; something like the air that we breath and the sun that shines on us. Nobody can live without a friend. The Bible says that whomever finds a friend finds a treasure (Ecl 6,14 ). God himself had and has his friends. As a matter of example, Abraham is named "friend of God” (Isaiah 41, 8 and James 2, 23). Jesus called the apostles his “friends” (John 15, 15) and he also had personal friends: Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary (John 11, 1-35). Therefore, we may also be a friend to God and Jesus. I invite you to make the effort to see, feel and treat Jesus as a personal friend whom we need very much.

Día Mundial del Enfermo
February 11th is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes which is also the date in which the Church celebrates “World Day of the Sick”. I’d like to take this opportunity to talk a little about the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Before Vatican II it was called “Last Rites” because it was only administered to those who were dying. This sacrament is now “not a sacrament for only those who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for them to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1514). This sacrament can only be administered by a priest or bishop. Biblical references: a) Christ gives power to the Apostles to heal the sick: Luke 9: 1-2; Matthew 10: 7-8; b) The Apostles heal the sick: Revelation 5:15-16; James speaks of the power of the Anointing imparted to the presbyters: James 5; 14-15.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) presents a summary of this sacrament in numbers 1526-1532. This last one tells us: “The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has as its effects: the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church; the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age; the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of Penance; the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul; the preparation for passing over to eternal life.”

Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria

+++++++Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
February 2: Forty days after Christmas the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, also known as the feast of Candlemas is celebrated. According to Leviticus (12: 2-7), women who gave birth had to go through purification by praying and resting for 40 days in their homes. When the time was over the mother along with her husband would take the child to the temple. This is how Mary and Joseph did this: they presented the Christ Child to the temple and offered a pair of doves (pigeons). Simeon prophesized that this Child was the light of the world (Luke 12, 22-32). This feast day is the derivative for the symbolism of candles which represent the light of Christ thus the name Candlemas which signifies illuminator. Mary is the one who carries the Child, gives light and therefore here comes the origin of the names Our Lady of Light or Our Lady of Candles or Candlemas. In Mexico it is a custom to have the person who discovered the plastic figurine in the king bread (6th of January) become the godparent for the Christ Child and this responsibility would include “picking up” the baby Jesus from the manger (the one that was laid on the 24th of December) and dress him. Once he is dressed, the godparent takes him to Mass on the 2nd of February (where the priest is asked to bless the Child). Upon returning from Mass, the Child is seated in a chair where he will remain all year long. The celebration ends with a meal consisting of tamales, atole (a corn flour drink) and hot chocolate all served by the godparents. Each region and ethnic group marks this celebration with their own cultural characteristics. The celebration consists of popular dancing, fireworks, processions, music to wake people inviting them to go to the temple, carnivals, band music, theatrical representations, flower exchange, traditional dances and of course the blessing of the Children dressed in their best clothes.
