30 de agosto, 2009: Una Parábola sobre la Educación

Mensaje semanal del 30 de agosto, 2009
Nuestros niños y jóvenes están de regreso a clases. ¡Felicidades! Es una magnífica oportunidad para agradecer la oportunidad de recibir una buena educación; y de valorar este regalo. Voy a recordar con ustedes una parábola sobre la educación, escrita por William Cunningham, escritor británico.
Iba un hombre caminando por el desierto cuando oyó una voz que le dijo: “Levanta algunos guijarros (piedras pequeñas), mételos en tu bolsillo y mañana te sentirás a la vez triste y contento”. Aquel hombre obedeció. Se inclinó, recogió un puñado de guijarros y se los metió en el bolsillo. A la mañana siguiente, vio que los guijarros se habían convertido en diamantes, rubíes y esmeraldas. Y se sintió feliz y triste. Feliz, por haber recogido los guijarros; triste, por no haber cogido más. Lo mismo ocurre con la educación.

++++++Our children and young students are back in school. Congratulations! This is a wonderful opportunity to be thankful for the gift of education we have received; and to value this gift. I will share with you a parable about education, written by William Cunningham a British writer.

There was once a man who was walking along in the desert when he heard a voice say: “Pick up some pebbles put them in your pocket and tomorrow you will feel both sad and happy”. The man followed the voice’s instructions. He bent over and picked up a handful of pebbles and placed them in his pocket. The next morning, he noticed the pebbles had turned into diamonds, rubies and emeralds. He felt happy and sad. He was happy because he had picked up the pebbles and he felt sad because he should have picked up more. The same happens with education.

28 de agosto: San Agustín

Desde muy joven leí las “Confesiones” de San Agustín. La primera vez las leí en latín, lengua en la que originalmente fueron escritas. Honestamente, me acerqué al libro porque me lo habían recomendado como una de las obras clásicas de la literatura latina. En ese tiempo estudiaba yo Humanidades y Literatura y me interesaban sobremanera las obras clásicas griegas y latinas. Leí varias obras de San Agustín, pero mi lectura preferida fue, y ha sido, la de las Confesiones”. La lectura de este libro me dejó al mismo tiempo un buen sabor y una tremenda inquietud por encontrar la verdad de mi vida. La segunda vez, las leí en español, en una excelente traducción crítica. Hace unos cuantos años volví a leerlo pero en inglés. Les confieso que no me canso de leer a San Agustín. El ha sido no sólo uno de mis escritores preferidos sino también uno de los santos que más admiro. Cada que se presenta la oportunidad, recomiendo a las personas que lean sus “Confesiones”. ++++++++++++As a young man I read “Confessions” by St. Augustine. The first time I read it was in Latin which was the original language it was written. To be honest, I read the book because it was recommended as a literary classic of Latin Literature. Back in those days I studied Humanities and Literature and I was interested in Greek and Latin literary classics. I read various pieces of work about St. Augustine but my favorite was and still is “Confessions”. This book left both a good feeling and tremendous anxiety about finding out the truth in my life. The second time I read it in Spanish and it was an excellent translation. A few years later I read it again in English. I confess that I do not get tired of reading about St. Augustine. He has been one of my favorite writers and one of the saints whom I admire most. Every time I get the opportunity, I recommend reading his “Confessions”. If you visit my blog, you may find this book in the “Links” section (http://padrejesuscamacho.blogspot.com/) I recommend it. The Church celebrates his feast day on August 28.
